The board of management manages the school on behalf of the patron and is accountable to the patron and the Minister. The board must uphold the characteristic spirit (ethos) of the school and is accountable to the patron for so doing. Each board generally has eight members, two of whom are parent representatives with membership designed to reflect all the different interests in the school community including the patron, parents, teachers and wider community.

The responsibilities of the board should include:
• Ensuring the quality of pupil learning
• Recruitment of staff
• Ensuring the high quality of teaching
• Developing and reviewing the school plan
• Developing school policies
